Jack Lumpkin
Jack Lumpkin was born in Macon, Georgia, on June 20, 1935. In Jack’s early career, he won the Georgia State High School Class A Championship in 1951 and 1953. He went on to play four years at the University of Georgia from 1953 – 1957 and was co-captain of the team in 1956 and 1957. In 1957, the team won the SE Conference Championship. After graduating, Jack played briefly on the Tour in 1958 and 1959. During his career, he played in the JayCee National Junior Championship, participated in two NCAA Championships, the US Amateur, three US Opens, PGA Championship, five National PGA Club Pro Championships and the US Senior Open. Jack turned professional in 1957, and after playing on Tour went to work as an assistant at Winged Foot. He later became Head Professional at Echo Lake and Oak Hill Country Club. He was President of the Western New York PGA from 1968 to 1970. Jack was Western NY Golf Professional of the Year in 1970 and was Player of the Year in 1970 and 1971. Jack was host professional at the US Open at Oak Hill in 1968. From 1972 through 1978, he was Head Professional at Cherokee Golf and Country Club. In 1979, he became a full time member of the Golf Digest staff and continued as such for the next 22 years while based at Pinehurst, Elk River and Amelia Island. He came to Sea Island in 1989. In 1995, Jack was the PGA National Teacher of the Year and was selected among the top 50 golf teachers in America (no. 1 in Georgia) by Golf Digest. Ever since 2000 through the present, Jack has been selected to top 50 and no. 1 in Georgia. In December 2000, the National Golf Foundation presented the Jack Nicklaus Golf Family of the Year Award to the Jack Lumpkin family. Jack and his wife, Sherry, have one son and two daughters.
