Spencer Sappington
Spencer Sappington was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, on February 26, 1943. He graduated from Lincoln University, where he captained the golf team and was NCAA Division II All-American in 1965. After college and service in the Air National Guard, Mr. Sappington enjoyed a successful 33-year career with American Express Company. Mr. Sappington has won 13 Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) Championships, including a record three straight Georgia Senior Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and a fourth win in 2007. Mr. Sappington became the first four-time champion in tournament history. He was awarded the Georgia Senior Player of the Year in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and received the GSGA Tommy Barnes Award in 2004 as Outstanding Player of the Year. Additional accomplishments include Georgia Match Play Champion (1998), and three Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championships with fellow Hall of Fame inductees Jerry Greenbaum (1998) and Bill Ploeger (2001, 2002 & 2007). Mr. Sappington also won the Georgia PGA Senior Open in 1994. To date, he has qualified for 19 USGA events. Golf Digest ranked him in the top ten among senior amateurs in 2001 and 2003 and Golfweek ranked him in the top ten in 2002 and 2003. In addition to his Georgia golf accomplishments, he also had very successful tournament records in both Missouri and Arizona. His contributions to the game include participating on the Board of Directors for the Jim Dawson Memorial Tournament, serving on various GSGA committees and as a rules volunteer at GSGA tournaments. Married to Debi for 13 years, he has a son, Spencer Sappington III, and a daughter, Audrey Allen, as well as stepchildren Lauren Perkins and John Hefele III and five grandchildren. He is a member of Polo Golf and Country Club in Cumming, Georgia, and Meadow Lake Acres Country Club, Jefferson City, Missouri, and The Society of Seniors.

Spencer Sappington was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame on January 12, 2008.
