Beckmann was born in Savannah, Ga., on July 11, 1918. He began his professional
career at age 17 when he took an assistant professional position at the Bacon
Park Golf Course. He became the Head Golf Professional at the Mary Calder Course
in 1945. In 1949, Mr. Beckmann became the Head Golf Professional at Peachtree
Golf Club in Atlanta. In 1953, he returned to the Mary Calder Course, where he
remained for the next 31 years. Mr. Beckmann is a Half Century Member of the PGA.
He served as president of the Southeastern PGA from 1952 to 1953. He was named
Georgia PGA Professional of the Year in 1974. He has been a member of the Ryder
Cup Committee on four occasions and accompanied the team to England in 1961, 1965,
and 1969. Mr. Beckmann has served as the tournament announcer on the 9th and 18th
greens of the Masters Tournament for 34 years.
