Fielding
Wallace
American
golf lost one of its best friends when Fielding Wallace of Augusta, Ga., died
in 1954. For more than 50 years, Mr. Wallace had been a leader in the game. He
was involved in the organization of the Georgia State Golf Association in 1924
and served as president from 1936 to 1945. He served as president of the United
States Golf Association in 1948 and 1949. He was a founding member of the Augusta
National Golf Club and served as secretary until his death. He was president of
the Augusta Country Club from 1921 to 1935. Mr. Wallace was a gentleman who exemplified
the old maxim that "the first quality of a gentleman is gentleness."
Fielding Wallace was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame on January
4, 1992. |
